In IT my skills are mostly in Project management, Requirements gathering, and Google Workspace. System Admin and Network are tasks I often delegate.
Its mostly in home projects do I get to really apply it. But my main problem is budget and time.
Lately the Data protection Act has gotten me to back up and check our security settings at the same time, I want to make sure my Desktop is running well.
Anyway what made System Admin difficult was really the lack of HOME application. Network Attached Storage and Backups are the MAIN home uses of System Admin.
Setting up a Shared Folder over the network and Setting up System Backups are the most basic.
The next is the Partitioning and reorganizing the OSes – seperating User Folders and Home Folders. this will entail some additional costs – typically +120GB and 1000Php plus the cables and power for this (Sata and power).
Next is setting up the Backups for this.
Whats strange and typical of IT, is that you need to spend on equipment. The external drives at about 3k for 2TB are great but those will fail and encounter problems. To have a Software Defined Storage system would be more expensive BUT per TB would be cheaper.
Reminds me of buying some stuff with good credit. At a certain level, its cheaper = The Sam Vimes Boot Theory plays out not just in IT. But it Plays out in Proj Management, and when You get to gain experience dealing with Vendors and making Large Scale purchases. If your a systems person, you realize that Procurement being an entire Knowldge Area in PMBOK makes sense.
Anyway – my bottleneck in my skill development is money
