Macros or Protein Counting,

So I measure by Meat to Grams. Since most meat tends to have ~20% protein, then 5 meat grams is equal to 1 protein gram. Note that I need: 2.2g of protein for every 1kg or 1g of protein for every 1lb I target for strength training. So I need about 60g to be sedentary or 166g if I want to be athletic. In between is how athletic can I get with my 36 year old diminished metabolism. Currently I am gunning for a 50% increase in my meat consumption to 300g or 60g of protein.

My next measure is Pesos per Gram. Fast Foods tend to be 1php = 0.02USD (or 2 cents) per gram. Long ago I measured a Jolibee drumstick and it was about 80g of meat for 80php (1:1 ratio).
  • SM roast beef was being sold at 40g for 80php which was 2php per grams and less.
  • Chef Resty’s roast beef 130php for 100g of roast beef for 1.3php per gram.
Its when I checked why people used chicken when I realized a more sustainable way to get protein.
  • SM Roast Chicken Classic is 150php for 500grams. Of that 300g is meat. It works around to 0.5php per gram of meat. I would need the sacrifice of a chicken a day to satisfy such a basic protein requirement.
SM’s raw chicken is 130php per 1kg. which means you will be buying 2 chickens to make a kilo After cooking. If chickens reduce by 20% after cooking. That works about 0.33php per gram. Now you have this quandery: 1 life of a chicken a day or 1 life every 2 days. Another one is that a chicken so small, would probably less “stuff” in its system in its relatively short life (typically 1 month of growing instead of the usual 3-4 months).
  • I have a neighbor who sells roast chicken. It works out at 200php per chicken or 0.4php per gram of meat. I could live on 1 chicken every 2 days. 3 chickens a week. much more optimal and incredibly convenient.

  • I saw magnolia selling breast for 210php per Kg. Cooked bland thats 0.2php per gram. But that was kinda wasteful. At 200php per KG that would be an 1kg roasted chicken would be 600g of meat or 0.33php per gram of meat. At least most of the parts are consumed.
  • Here is a 140php (3usd) “quarter pounder” (112g more precisely). It works to worse than 1.4 php per meat gram since with extenders the meat tends to be half as much protein. With such pseudo meat the value of php to meat ends up 2.8php per gram of real meat.
  • I checked out Spam and Sausages and they are 10% meat and double the calories. Totally the suckiest thing to have in your diet.
  • I experimented with Chili. It was in efficient since all the other ingredients made each portion half meat and half everything else. One nice take away was making a “mushroom Chili” where instead of beans I just added a bunch of different mushrooms which was kinda awesome.
  • Stakes and Tender Cuts were about 450-800php per Kg (10 to 20usd). that basically made it 0.45 to 1php per gram. So when ever I eat fastfood
So what is the best strategy for meat (not protein) if you are a Filipino with filipino’s rising cost of living but poor escalating wages?
The answer is Chicken, typically meal prep chicken.

Ideally home prepped (like in /r/mealprep)  and with the investment of containers to put them all in so you can prep them all on each week end. But in light of the Yogurt Post this would be the cheapest source of protein at 0.6php per gram. If you eat 160g a day for body building you will be spending 96php to 320php depending if you get it from yogurt or meat. Thats 3k a month if yogurt or 10k per month if meat.
