IT is about Hardware – because of my moderate-income (130k PHP /mo but to USA that’s 30k a year, note that 25% is taxed for a much smaller take-home; starting from 2,400usd/year or 10,000php/mo in 2006) to use I can buy a spare computer as I learn Linux and make mistakes. I can have more powerful computers (when regular people use 10 year old computers here in the Philippines and the prices are 30-40% to 100% that of the USA prices).
I’m partnering with Schools because they can use our Old hardware for their classes. Using an HP Thin Client + a realtek 4Gigatbit PCIE card to make a 60-100usd 5 port firewall is a HUGE advantage for schools for them to learn to use Networks.
I found out the DLSU and CSB (my alma mater) have millions of pesos (tens of hundreds of thousands of USD) of equipment and our partner schools don’t. So leveling the playing field is happening as we buy and deploy 3d Printers (Creality Ender 3 Neos), AVID CNC 5’x10′ 3-axis routers, etc… Slowly I will level the playing field a bit and have a lot of students access to our equipment so that they get to better decide what they want in the future. We have about 80+ OJTS – from IT, ECE, ME and Industrial Design and Engineering. I hope to have more.
I cant afford this 1M PHP server, but we have approval to buy a 24GB VRAM GPU for AI research. that’s about 250k PHP or 5,000usd that should only cost 3,000usd in the USA. Heck I found my USA and CANADA friends are getting COVID booster shots and there is none in the Philippines. We may have to do “Health Tourism” going to Singapore, Taiwan, Japan OR Korea to get a Vaccine.
