Lessons Learned: Joining Project Management Institute (150usd a year) and Researching MBA

So I joined PMI. It ended up costing about 8000php a year.
I spent most of the afternoon downloading all the Books and Reading the Site.

I realized I can make the I need the 23 education Credit hours needed to be able to apply for CAPM  ( Project Management Institute: Certified Associate of Project Management. ). I also realized that the test is something I can do, and my strong preference to the PMBOK as compared to the current company process is fueling my drive to apply it.

I believe if I spend about 7 hours a week revieing and writing about it, as well as training my staff about it (the Presales need to learn how to learn some of the PLANNING phases of PMBOK so that they can better win the project. I realize when we are BIDDING against other contractors they are making a lot of WILD promises to the client to win. Technical Mastery is needed and thats where the PRESALES (aka Solutions Engineer or Architect) to ensure the client can see for themselves the exaggerations of the competing bid; and for us to find a competing bid we can learn from).

I feel like in 4 months or 16 weeks of these drills and writing, and echoing the training. I also have to write and understand the process when it comes to my company. Basically making the Work Instruction of PMing.

PMI membership130usd a year (free Basic stuff) will buy later.
400usd/300usd
I need to master the exam app, a Good exam app. Master the concepts using SRS and Visually Map the Processes.

Review.
  1. Why now? Well Project Management is one of the WORSE elements of the company. Its the reason we have TERRIBLE cashflow and projects accumilate more costs.
    1. While I’m just the QMR and writing policies – this is the best time to improve it because right now we only have a Few Projects and if the PMs leave or Quit because of the changes then we can take over and manage the project. The Status Bias in the company is that Projects trump everything – absolutely everything – people can use Clients as an excuse to fail to perform basic tasks like reporting and duties and responsibilities.
    2. Our PMs are merely coordinators. They dont do planning because they’ve allowed a lot of the busy work of Permits and Building Admin coordination distract them. Actually there is a way to help them with the Busy Distracting Work, and delegate it to our Foremen/Leadmen.
    3. The PMO manager will try to Undo the Changes I’ve brought while he was Sick and Away.
  2. I have the Payroll and the New Cebu Data Center and Improvement of our Own Data Center added to my Duties.
  3. I’m depressed. My Art Background is Plaguing me. I have to make plans for when the Family Business may not be around in my lifetime. I’m worried I cannot correct the abuses (see using proximity to the client in 1.1 to excuse everything) since honestly I really have no Controls.

Key Challenges to an MBA.

Reviewing the Executive MBA of Ateneo, an MBA without any Homework (hopefully) I’ve learned a few things.
  1. 42 or So Units. A unit is a Class a week of 4 hours. 1 Class or 3 Units per Trimester would equate to 14 trimesters to about 5 years (42 units / 3 units = Number of trimesters to Finish = 14 trimesters = 14/3 trimesters = 5 plus years). If I take 2 Units per Trimester (the Max allowed) thats 7 semesters of 2.34 Years.
  2. How much is A Semesters. About 35-70k per Semester in ATENEO.
  3. in DLSU Graduate School of Business The Website Gives about (here is the GSHEET) 45k for 6 units see DLSU02 (the wesbite says 109k, see DLSU01 but I remomved the Lab and Research fees because I’m guessing they should not be counted).
Initial Research But making Educated Guesses this may be Wrong.
