So last night I had a dream that work was hard. The strongest emotion of the dream was Uncertainty and Futility. Basically I’m trying to work towards planning and being able to predict the next weeks work and being able to finish my projects.
Right now My main problem is Decision Analysis – the ability to communicate how important we have to migrate away from 250-700 passmark computers and start using laptops so that we can do opportunistic and, in the ideal, regular training in Desktop Workflows. Its one of my great fears that all that work is worthless because the generation of my bosses don’t really use computers and see it as a toy.
While in the States and Developed Countries the generation of my Bosses (those in their 50s right now) their teens in the 80s gave them computers, that was not the case in the Philippines. Many don’t do their own Power Point Presentation even when the company has declared that there will be no Secretary Positions – and people will do their own documentation. Spreadsheets are not used with function – they are basically arraying data tools – with very minimal functions and calculations.
So Pivot Tables, Dashboards out of those Pivot Tables, Databases and Electronic Forms, etc… are not appreciated and they don’t know how much to assign to it.

What if I told you that migrating to Laptops will Double the productivity of the 12 hours a week people spend behind their Computers. Then you would put a price to that 12 hours a week and weigh it against the computer.
Imagine 100 computer users in the company doing twice the amount of work with the cost of 15-30usd a month (1000-1,500) php a month (if I divided the capital expense over time and recurring )*
Its not instantaneous. It needs a 11% allocation, 5mh out of the 43mh a week to study and improve. that – it should not be PANIC and Crunchtime EVERYDAY that there should be a calm and steady effortful study every week.
That If I was given a task – example doing a Decision Analysis with all the Data (10,000 words) I can do it x5 faster than the average employee and I want to raise people to about x3 their current level but it will take an additional manpower cost 1,300php a month or about 25usd. That it will pay off about after 200mh and about a year after – when the achievements are most tangible and the monthly achievable of 5-8% gains will be not be appreciated (People benchmarking in 20-100%).
Then its just a GUESS, its a guess when I look at My Workflow and I compare it to the rest of the company’s. that I have the audacity to think my workflow is far better. That I want every decision (probably 40-80 major decision per year) to be in a TABLE (my Risk Analysis dashboard).
THIS IDEA. how can you present it in a Piece of Paper with calculations. What Decision Analysis in Corporate Finance can put a Monetary Value to this Semi Qualitative decisions.
This is pretty much the Gamble of a Business – where if there was a White Paper about it, then everyone would have done it already and it would only be common sense and not entrepreneurial. Where we cannot spend hundreds of thousands of pesos on a study that would take months to accomplish.
Especially in light of the 20% Manpower cutting cost lolz. (that is a Operations Directive; The IDEAL is that we have DATA that supports the 20% manpower cost lolz – the same kind of gungho call is what fills me with anxiety as gungho calls are emotional and not systematic).
*30,000php laptop, lasting 36months. is around 16usd a month. The GSUITES account is about +10usd or 500, the Software Licenses for the Technical will amount to roughly +10usd a month as well. averaging about 25usd or 1300php a month.
