I was wondering how many personal projects have slipped through the cracks. So I decided to just apply a simple GTD solution of putting my projects in a bucket so that I am more aware of them and what they mean.
Scope of Goals
As I was listing my projects, I then realized I needed to list some of them in an achievable or attainable goal. There are two forms: Open Ended ones like: Chinese, Game Writing, Health, etc… and there are minor projects that can end or is part of something more bigger. I should not overthink the categories and definition (which leads to endless navel gazing). What is important is that I have to have my Goals and Projects visible and think strategically about how I spend my time and how I set my goals.
Just writing this now I realize I need to keep the “active projects” on top and the “dormant” projects in the someday maybe.
This is a quick screencap of the list as I started it. Its not ended there, I will make the writing projects its own project and the list will definitely grow.
Opportunity Cost of this Method
Tracking Projects in this way takes time. Its going to take me about 20-30 mins tracking my projects in this way. Probably 2-3 times a week I’ll need to update these as much as I can. In the end I hope to have 2 Project Tracking Lists: Work and Personal.
Guidelines for the List
- I scale my time in Weeks.
- Anything I cannot progress in, in the span of a week should be considered “dormant” and in the someday maybe part of the list.
- Attempts, especially Failures are considered Progress. Its just discovering a method that does not work.
- I need to find 3-4 hours a week to update this list and fleshout the projects.
- I need to be able to use my phone or mobile device to easily update these.
