After working with my mom on my weight vest and researching on nylon fabric its like all the vests I see are SHIT and only the $90 and up vests make the least effort (with the good ones are niche sellers costing $200 and up for their vests and rigs). BTW this is just to hold 10lbs of sand ankle weights.
TIL the Pistol belts and many of the “Nylon” based straps we see in bags and stuff is called “Nylon Webbing” which I thought was a way to describe load bearing gear but is actually describing the nylon straps. Webbing is in grades, heavy duty like what we see in pistol belts and straps. Ballistic Nylon (as in from balistic fragments and not bullets) is another name for Nylon Webbing.
Nylon is graded in “Ds” or Deniers. Basically 1000D means 1000grams per 9000 meters of thread/nylon/yarn. So if 9000m of thread’s weight. The higher the D the heavier the weight of the thread the tougher and less flexible the material.
If you remember Paper, where there is grams per square meter, D’s or Deniers are the same. Grams per area of 9000meters of woven thread.
Dri-Fit, Quick-Dry, Fast-Dry etc… all it is Polyester. Some are better than others but what is important is that unlike Cotton, Polyester is not good at holding water, thus it conducts water from your skin and into the air outside. It is cooler.
Polyester is Naturally Quick-Dry and its just marketing trying to say it “SUCKS” out moisture because they all suck out moisture through
CAPILLARY ACTION. It also cools because the heat is released because Capilliary action also aids in transferring heat away from the body if the temperature outside is cooler (principle of homeostasis).
Also Polyester is more permeable. A simple test is to stand infront of the Aircon and wear a cheap polyester shirt vs a cotton shirt, which one feels cooler.
Some cloths have grades of polyester, Uniqlo has a Quick dry shirt that is merely 30% polyester.
Drawback – Polyester is a FIRE HAZARD! Its Flamability makes it a liability. if you have a pile of polyester near an outlet – FIX THAT! If your opponent is using Incendiary rounds – thats fucked up.
Of course as polyesters can be made and manipulated, since it pertains to a broad category of plastic family materials there is “fire proof” polyester which i better than cotton or linen when it comes to fires… of course that is expensive.
