I began as an Idealist, then found out that in the nitty gritty what I dreamed about was impossible. I learned the pragmatic side of business and how you should always cover your risks, expenses, and get compensated for your effort…
That part of biz is easy, because its a checklist and basically a math problem where once you’ve solved it you can take that template where ever you go.
Now the hardest is making a Good Intention work the way it was… intended. Thats the hardest thing to do, and the most rewarding thing.
I think I look at it like I appreciate airsoft, I don’t get any kills in the unfair playing field but I like going through the routes and exercises of good tactics and play. I do the same in biz, there are some difficult trials, like winning a bid with in my standard of ethics. We don’t win as often as we’d like, but we try a lot so that we can work those odds.
There is the everyday work challenge: crafting a proposal and negotiations where there is a client “out for blood” (meaning they don’t care if you don’t make any money or lose money, they want what they want). Thats the real world and its a very unforgiving place.
The altruistic goals, now those are the Fun Projects. They are the projects where you strategize how self-interest can serve the greater good with some altruism in the mix. Those gives me faith in humanity, those kind of little projects makes it easier to sleep at night, and when they work out they beat back the fear and uncertainty that make people less kind, understanding, and nice.
