I think there is some missing some context – they are consolidating and moving towards where they can “win-win” there is always dissent and the ability to pursue what is best for themselves. Whats happening is consolidation as there is NEED for the EU to build their tech stack. Them going their separate ways means they each have their own direction and forces influencing them.
The Euro Office NEEDS to happen – and it has to be “clean” and really controlled by Europeans – no Influence by party who doesnt have the same stakes and circumstance as the EU – who wont suffer the same.
as for Collabora – We tried contributing to LO and I’ve written my TTRPG books in LO and came from Open Office. Our office of 100 users – we got LO for NextCloud – I taught how to use LO and helped in the troubleshooting. When I used various Ai tools to study it and learn how to make contributions – OMG the 90s code base (which was mentioned) – its a mess. There is so much Technical DEBT. It took claude 30 minutes to make a Plugin for Only office. It took me all my Claude tokens for the week, Gemini Pro, Kimi 2.5 to make a LO plug in that converts numbers to text. There is just so much technical debt and Collabora needs to in my opinion LO is politically complicated /burdened – internally. If no one can contribute to LO – how can it change.
People are trying to make a Living to migrate people from Windows to Linux by building all the Plugins or Apps to migrate them to Linux. We now cover NextCloud, TrueNAS, Netgate, and Frappe-Erpnext and even FreeCAD-Openfoam/Blender/Godot (the holy trinity of engineering) combined with Wine – a Company or School has a value proposition to save 40-80% of their Opex with Linux – but if they are too hard to use to create that migration then they wont be used. Imagine Thousands of Integrator that can migrate and support companies to migrate to Open Source – money for jobs and a demand for support and services.
those of us in developing Countries see EU as the stable hope for the future – as a market to sell to and a source of technology – and leadership. We cannot pass privacy respecting laws and adopt open source if we dont have examples of the EU to take to our stakeholders. If the EU doesnt seize all this Open Source technology to BUild this tech stack, they dont have that Freed Up Funds to Hire All the Talent that was Laid off by the US and the US Tech Elite – as the manpower to Rebuild essential Tech in the EU (and the “Middle Powers”) taking full advantage of the Brain Drain – and this virtuous cycle or Flywheel will have a harder time starting without these major initiatives.
