Why Train a Lot of People for free, for skills people pay good money for?

We have an ojt program. We train them in:

  1. ERPNext, – using ERPNext for their business processes.
    1. Buying module
    2. Stock Module
    3. Accounting Module
    4. Selling Module and CRM.
    5. Projects Module (So far… HR, Payroll, and Manufacturing is still a way to go).
    6. We train Accounting, IT, Biz Admin in this – because they need to learn the tools to AUTOMATE their procedures and speed up the operations.
    7. Deployment of Server, Configuration, and Training and on-boarding users.
  2. Business Process Management
    1. CRITICAL is valuing process and thinking in systems and processes.
    2. QUALITY management
    3. Stakeholder Management – Developing a procedure with stakeholders and balancing the need of competing interests and goals.
    4. Improvising and the Preparation needed to implement change processes.
  3. Virtualization – Google Cloud and Virtual Box, and Ubuntu. Shifting from the traditional machine per service – to Redundant-Hypervisors and VMs that can be deployed, backed up, and modified. Prototyping, Testing, Fixing, Implementing: continuous implementation and fixing cycle.
  4. Project Management
    1. Documentation and Planning
    2. Agendas, Focus, KPIs, results and action-based framework,
    3. Reporting and Feedback – dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity.
Why Train a lot of People in these skills?
  1. Because they are sorely needed, We experience the lack of these skills every day in our procedures and encounters with problems,
  2. because Training them teaches them to adhere to the procedures – Why we document, why we report, what to do when problems arise – what normally happens is people hit dead ends, they try not to predict issues, they gamble instead of ensuring an action succeeds, they don’t choose their battles or wins, they don’t win-win, they think in zero-sum.
Would Training a lot of people in these Skills Reduce the Value of the Skills of people who have it?
  1. NO because, as previously explained, they work when there is teamwork. marching is useless if only one person knows how to MARCH, but everyone cannot keep step. Teamwork is useless if only one person cooperates and everyone else in the team doesn’t.
  2. It multiplies the Values of people – someone who can Deliver more Value and Productivity can let their Organization Afford to pay them more. A
  3. As more people become skilled, a large chunk of humanity shapes the market – more efficiency means lower or more competitive goods and services – it means cheaper.
    1. An Organization that can produce 10 value per 1 worker now produces 30 value per 1 worker, they may double the pay of that worker – everyone gets more value and the worker gets better compensation. or the 10 value per 1 worker is now 12 value per one worker and the worker can ask for 5-10% increase or the company can afford to give increase matching inflation or better.
    2. See Comparative Advantage –
What do we get out of this?
  1. We get better at Training because we are practicing training people the skills we believe has value. Unlike people who don’t practice Training others – they wont get better as they don’t practice training.
    1. What’s funny is that – a company that believes they are the best but DOESNT spend a lot of time -reinforcing they are the best by failing to train – to see every opportunity as one to improve and to learn. How can one consider themselves BETTER if they aren’t learning?
    2. is everything a learning opportunity or just drudgery and unnecessary suffering? If its an opportunity to learn – how are you keeping track? how are you codifying it as skill?
  2. Our trainees give us feedback and we actually learn a lot from them because they tear down assumptions we didn’t know existed. They challenge what we know and help us find our complacency.
  3. School and Biz Partners. With open source approach – people are free to share knowledge with us as we share knowledge with them. They give us opportunities to see how FLEXIBLE and capable we our by giving us more conditions to express our abilities.
    1. Right now we are in talks with Schools for their Capstone and Feasibility studies (National University) – the plant, our data center (which is solely our use, and has no clients), and designing capabilities (OJTS and Nicco Salonga designing procedures for FreeCAd and Blender) are being augmented with this partnership.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/694845141725089
    2. ERPnext DIY FB group shows there is a need for these skills and OJT’s. To be fair people are hoping for rock bottom prices through getting Freshgrads – but we believe that there is an opportunity to develop skills here and grow.
What are the RISKS and Problems of this approach
  1. Balancing the Operations Work and Finding Time to Train. Since Training will yield results after hundreds of hours – we have to be effective in training so that we have more time to work and be efficient in work so we have time to Train.
  2. That – initially its hard to measure in a small scale. But it gets easier to measure when we’ve had tens of OJTS – and not just treating them as disposable – but really having an engaged role in getting them gainful employment. Using our Network and opportunity to help these students get a good job and offer.
  3. No one understands teamwork. As in sports, games, and even in work – shocking is how often the point is missed. No one wants to improve processes, train, or Teach because they have been spent and nothing remains – when everyone is tired firefighting – and lessons cannot be learned and behavior does not change – then no one will hope for anything other than less pain and unnecessary suffering. Its a vicious cycle of Lack of Value – creating more Wasted Value – as people waste each others time to the deficit creeps into the lives of all involved.
